The Saturday Service
The Saturday Service came about because the people on the streets began to ask why
we were doing this work. This led to us explaining that we were Christians, serving
Jesus. Many of the homeless felt alienated when they walked into an existing church
service, so we set up a special Saturday Service geared to their needs. This takes
place every week, starting at 12pm and finishing at 2pm and during this time a hot meal will be served.
Our aims are:
1) To create a community atmosphere in which everyone is helping out, rather than
an "us and them" approach.
2) For churches who are involved in donating and preparing food throughout the year
to visit the service and experience first hand how their work is making a difference
to people's lives.
3) That people attend this service because they want to know more about Jesus and
not as a means to obtaining food. People are therefore welcome to come for a hot
meal whether they attend the service beforehand or not. However, as people are welcomed
in and served food in a compassionate Christian environment our experience is that
they want to know the Christian faith or find out more about it. In this way they
are led to attend the service because they are hungry for God.
In addition to these main aims we are looking to increase the Saturday Service to
a weekly event. We currently have a pool of six ministers who take the service throughout
the year, and we are looking to bring in teams of worship leaders who will devote
a number of Saturdays each year to us. In addition we welcome more helpers in order
to create a one to one ration of Christian alongside non-Christian.
