Welcome the Stranger
This project has run for several years now. Its purpose is to provide food parcels
to asylum seekers who are either awaiting the outcome of their appeal or those denied
asylum and awaiting deportation. Those who are denied asylum would have their lives
threatened by immediate return.
They come from countries such as Iraq, Iran, Darfur, Cameroon, Libya, Czech Republic,
Russia, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Uganda and Ethiopia. They are mainly single, but there
are also families. The age range of those receiving help range from a few months
old to sixty or seventy.
At the moment we use a hall one morning per week as a drop in centre, where people
can meet and socialise over a cup of tea or coffee. At about 11:30am donated food
which has been collected is put into parcels to distribute to each person as they
leave.
Many of these people have been traumatised by their experiences and need support
to help build up trust and self esteem, regaining their confidence again.
Often we visit these people in their homes to continue building on the friendship
we have established.
There are usually about thirty - thirty five people who attend our sessions.
